Squid Game* is a South Korean survival drama television series created by Hwang Dong-hyuk. Released on Netflix in September 2021, it quickly became a global phenomenon, gaining massive popularity for its intense storyline, emotional depth, and sharp social commentary.
The story centers around Seong Gi-hun, a man deeply in debt and struggling with life. He is invited to participate in a mysterious game promising a huge cash prize. Desperate for money to support his daughter and escape his miserable life, Gi-hun accepts the invitation. Upon arrival, he discovers that 456 participants, all in financial ruin, are competing in a series of deadly children's games. The prize: ₩45.6 billion (approximately \$38 million USD). The cost of failure: death.
The players must go through six rounds of classic childhood games, such as "Red Light, Green Light," "Tug of War," and "Marbles." However, the twist is that failure to win results in immediate execution. As the games progress, alliances form and friendships break. Players are forced to make brutal decisions for survival. The organizers of the game, masked and anonymous, observe the participants as mere entertainment, emphasizing the dark contrast between wealth and poverty.
Seong Gi-hun evolves as a character. Initially naive and kind-hearted, he must adapt to the harsh reality of the games. Other notable characters include Cho Sang-woo, Gi-hun’s childhood friend and a former investment banker; Kang Sae-byeok, a North Korean defector; and Oh Il-nam, an old man suffering from a brain tumor. Each character has their own tragic backstory, showcasing the various reasons people fall into debt and desperation.
Beyond the violence and drama, *Squid Game* delivers strong social commentary. It critiques capitalism, economic disparity, and the dehumanization of the poor. The players are treated as expendable for the entertainment of the rich, symbolizing how the real-world economic system often exploits vulnerable people. The games represent the struggles of life in a system where only a few succeed while many suffer.
Visually, the series uses striking colors, surreal sets, and childlike imagery to create a disturbing contrast with the deadly stakes of the games. The iconic pink jumpsuits and geometric masks worn by the guards became cultural symbols, as did the green tracksuits of the players.
The show ends with a dramatic twist. Gi-hun, after winning the game, struggles with guilt and trauma. In a final shocking reveal, he learns that Oh Il-nam, the old man he befriended, was actually the mastermind behind the games, participating for fun before he died.
*Squid Game* became one of the most-watched series on Netflix, sparking global discussions about class, morality, and survival. Its success has led to merchandise, real-life game recreations, and plans for future seasons. It remains a powerful piece of storytelling that blends entertainment with a chilling reflec
tion of society.
